Stumptown Painters is a Portland-area house painting brand. We cover exterior repaints, interior painting, cabinet painting and refinishing, deck and fence staining, lead-safe painting on pre-1978 homes, and commercial repaints, for homes and buildings from inner Portland out to Hillsboro, Oregon City and Vancouver, WA. The full list is on the painting services page, and every city we cover has its own page under service areas.
What to expect from an estimate request
Tell us about the house and the work on the free estimate form. It takes about a minute. We review the request and follow up by the contact method you choose to ask about the project and set a time to see it. The estimate is free and in writing, and requesting one carries no obligation: nothing is agreed until you sign a contract.
A good written estimate lists every surface, the prep each one needs (washing, scraping, priming bare wood, caulking and any repairs), the paint product and line, the number of coats and the colors. If you want a number before anyone visits, the cost calculator gives a Portland-metro range in under a minute, and the bid checker shows what an Oregon or Washington painting contract has to contain.
Licensing, and how to check it
In Oregon, painting for pay requires an active Construction Contractors Board license, and work that disturbs paint on a pre-1978 home requires a CCB Lead-Based Paint Renovation license as well. In Vancouver and the rest of Clark County, contractors register with Washington L&I. Look the license up yourself before you sign any painting contract: how to check a painter's license in Oregon and Washington.
The guides, and how they are researched
The site publishes guides to what painting costs here, what common paint problems mean, when to paint in Portland's weather, and how to prepare a house. Factual claims rest on primary sources: Oregon statutes and rules, the CCB, the EPA lead-safe renovation rule, NOAA climate normals for Portland, the USDA Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook, and manufacturers' own technical documents. Pages that rest on them list them, with the date each one was last checked. A figure without a source is removed rather than kept. Price ranges are editorial estimates with a published method, not collected quotes.
The full standard is in the editorial policy, and every correction to a published fact is recorded on the corrections page. How the details you enter on the estimate form are used is set out in the Privacy Policy.
