When Is the Best Time to Paint a House Exterior in Portland?

Why dry-season prep wins, and how to plan around Portland's weather.

The short answer for Portland exteriors is mid-May through mid-September. That window is when the city reliably hits the 50-degree surface temperature and 4-hour dry stretch most paint manufacturers require for a proper cure. Outside that window, paint can still go on the wall, but it will not bond or wear the same way, and most reputable contractors will not warranty the work. Interior painting is year-round; the constraints are different because temperature and humidity inside your house are controlled.

Why Portland's window is so narrow

Two facts shape the season here. First, Portland averages about 36 inches of rain a year, most of it falling October through April. Second, paint chemistry is unforgiving. Acrylic latex paint needs the surface to be above 50 degrees Fahrenheit for at least four hours after application, and ideally for 24 hours after. If the surface drops below that, the binder will not coalesce properly and the film will be soft, less weather-tight, and more prone to peeling within a year or two.

Combine those: Portland often hits temperature minimums in March and April, but the dry-hour requirement is the deal-breaker. A day with morning rain and an afternoon high of 55 might look paintable, but the wood substrate carries moisture that prevents adhesion. The general rule is the surface needs to be dry to the touch in the morning and stay dry for 48 hours after coating.

The Portland exterior calendar

WindowWhat to do
January to FebruaryPlan and budget. Pull color samples. Identify carpentry repairs that need to happen before paint.
March to AprilGet quotes. This is the best window to lock in a summer slot. The good painters fill their summer calendar by early May.
Mid-May to mid-JulyPrime exterior paint season. Most jobs start here. Days are long, surfaces are dry.
Mid-July to mid-SeptemberStill excellent. Heat can be a factor on south exposures; painters often work earlier in the day.
Mid-September to mid-OctoberShoulder season. Possible but risky. Reliable dry stretches get shorter. Painters monitor the forecast daily.
Mid-October to AprilOff-season for exterior. Interior work shifts to the foreground. Most reputable painters will not warranty exterior work done now.

What happens if you paint outside the window?

Three failure modes are common:

  • Cold-cure failure. Paint applied below 50 degrees does not form a continuous film. Within 6 to 18 months, the finish becomes chalky, loses gloss unevenly, and starts to peel in sheets rather than flakes.
  • Moisture entrapment. Paint applied over a damp substrate seals water into the wood. As temperatures cycle, the trapped water expands and contracts and the paint blisters or lifts.
  • Mildew bloom. Cool damp conditions extend the dry time, giving mildew spores a longer window to land on the wet film. Common on north exposures painted in shoulder seasons.

Interior is year-round

Interior painting is largely insulated from Portland's weather. As long as your indoor temperature stays above 50 degrees and you can ventilate (open a window for an hour after each coat), you can paint interior surfaces any month of the year. The catch is that winter rooms are colder and slower to dry, so two coats on trim might take a full day each instead of two hours. Many Portland homeowners deliberately schedule interior work for November through March because the painters are less busy and sometimes quote 5 to 10 percent lower than peak summer rates.

  • Cabinet refinishing: get quotes 4 to 6 weeks before you want it done; year-round.
  • Whole-house interior: get quotes 4 to 6 weeks ahead; year-round.
  • Touch-up or single-room interior: 2 to 3 weeks ahead; year-round.

Common questions

Can you paint a house exterior in winter in Portland?

Not reliably. Most acrylic latex paint requires a 50-degree surface temperature and 4 dry hours after application, which Portland delivers consistently only mid-May through mid-September. Most reputable contractors will not warranty exterior work done in the wet season.

What's the minimum temperature to paint outside?

50 degrees Fahrenheit for surface temperature, and the surface needs to stay above that for at least 4 hours after the last coat goes on. Some specialty cold-weather formulas claim down to 35 degrees but they cost more and do not last as long.

When should I book a painter for summer?

March or April. The good Portland painters book their entire summer by early May, and the best ones by late April. If you wait until June you will be calling painters with summer cancellations, not painters with open slots.

Is it cheaper to paint in the off-season?

Modestly. Off-season interior work (November through March) is often 5 to 10 percent cheaper than peak summer rates because painters have more capacity. Exterior off-season work is risky regardless of price.

How long does an exterior paint job actually take?

A typical single-story exterior takes 3 to 5 days. A two-story with significant prep is 5 to 10 days. Weather extends timelines. Plan for at least one weather day per week of scheduled work.
